Privacy Policy
Last updated 28 September 2026
1. Who we are
We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and, for people in the United Kingdom and European Union, the UK GDPR and the GDPR. For anything about your privacy, email hello@garterly.com.
2. What we collect
- Account details: your email address, your password (stored in a form we can't read), and whether you're a couple or a planner. Planners also give their name and business name.
- Wedding details you add: the couple's names, wedding date and ceremony time, venues, city, country, currency, time zone, budget, vendors and their contact details, payments, gifts, tasks, schedule, seating, notes, mood board links and cover photos. Location data is removed from photos in your browser before they're uploaded.
- Guest details the couple adds: names, contact details, RSVP answers, tables and seats, and dietary requirements. Dietary requirements can reveal health information (such as an allergy) or religious beliefs, which the law treats as sensitive. We use them only to show them to the people planning that wedding and in their exports.
- Purchases: Stripe's Link service collects your card and billing details; we never see or store your full card number. We receive a record of the purchase: the amount, currency, date and the wedding it was for.
- Email records: when we sent invitations and reminders, so we can limit abuse and avoid sending twice.
- Technical information: our hosting and database providers keep logs, such as IP addresses, browser type and request times, for security and troubleshooting.
- Messages you send us.
3. How we use it
- To provide Garterly, including sharing a wedding with the partner and planners the couple invites.
- To send service emails: sign-up confirmation, password resets, invitations, and trial and payment reminders.
- To process purchases and apply your Wedding Pass.
- To keep Garterly secure, prevent abuse and fix problems.
- To answer your questions.
- To meet our legal obligations, such as keeping tax records.
We don't sell personal information, we don't use it for advertising, and we don't use your wedding details to train AI models.
For people in the UK and EU, our legal bases are: providing the service you asked for (contract); keeping Garterly secure and working (legitimate interests); meeting legal obligations; and your consent where we ask for it.
4. Emails
Service emails, such as sign-up confirmations, password resets and invitations, are part of Garterly. Reminder emails, such as a trial ending, include a one-click link to stop them. We don't send marketing emails. If we ever want to, we'll ask first.
6. Information sent overseas
Wedding data is stored in Australia. Some of our providers process information in other countries, including the United States and Japan. We choose providers with strong security. For people in the UK and EU, transfers are covered by adequacy decisions or standard contractual clauses.
8. Security
Information is encrypted in transit. Each wedding is locked to the people on it, with access checked by our database on every request. Photos are kept in private storage. No system is perfectly secure; if a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we'll tell you, and the regulator where the law requires.
9. How long we keep it
- Weddings: while they're active. After a trial or pass ends, a wedding stays read-only for 12 months; if nobody buys a pass or extension, we email the partners at least 30 days before deleting it.
- When you delete a wedding or your account, it's removed from Garterly straight away and from our backups within 30 days.
- Email records are deleted with the wedding they belong to. A request to stop reminder emails is kept until your account is deleted, so we keep honouring it.
- Purchase records: 5 years, as Australian tax law requires.
- Technical logs: kept by our providers for a short time, usually days to weeks.
10. Your choices and rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your personal information, and you can export your wedding yourself at any time. People in the UK and EU can also ask us to restrict or stop using their information, ask for a copy in a portable format, and withdraw consent. Email hello@garterly.com. We'll reply within 30 days.
If you're a guest and want your details changed or removed, you can ask the couple, or email us and we'll help. We may need to let the couple know.
11. Complaints
Please contact us first at hello@garterly.com. If you're not satisfied with our answer within 30 days, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au). In the UK you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk), and in the EU to your local data protection authority.
12. Children
Garterly accounts are for people 18 and over. Couples may add children as guests; their details are handled as described above.
13. Changes to this policy
We'll post changes here and email account holders about significant ones.
