How many guests should we invite?
Your budget and your venue set the number, so settle both first. Every guest adds catering, drinks, a chair and stationery. For a sense of scale, the average US wedding in 2025 had 117 guests.
Who gets a plus-one?
A common rule: married, engaged and live-in partners are invited by name, and the wedding party gets a plus-one. Beyond that it's your call; one rule for everyone means nobody feels singled out.
Do children count in the headcount?
Yes. Children take a seat and usually a meal, so count them. Many caterers price children's meals differently; check with yours.
When do we send invitations?
Most couples send invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding, after save-the-dates six to eight months out, and ask for replies three to four weeks before the day. Give guests travelling from overseas at least three months' notice.
Does the ceremony list differ from the reception list?
Sometimes. Some guests come to both, some to one. Garterly keeps a separate answer for each, so your venue gets the reception count and your celebrant the ceremony count.
